LOCATION: 11900 block of Pasco Road, Apple Valley

VICTIM(S): 18-month-old white male juvenile (name currently being withheld pending additional family notification)

SUMMARY: On February 20, 2018, at 1:30 pm, sheriff’s dispatch received a call of a traffic collision at the 11900 block of Pasco Road in the Town of Apple Valley. The caller said a one-year-old had been run over. At 1:33 pm, deputies arrived on scene and located the victim, an 18-month-old male lying in the front yard of the residence. CPR was initiated and continued until units from the Town of Apple Valley Fire Protection District, and an ambulance from American Medical Response arrived. Medics took over lifesaving efforts, and the juvenile was transported to a local area hospital. Unfortunately, the juvenile’s injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The initial investigation revealed an extended family returned to their residence after a day trip. Two adults and their respective children wherein a large SUV. When the SUV arrived, the driver stopped in the asphalt driveway approach. The mother of the victim removed him and his car seat from the SUV. The driver of the SUV exited the driver’s seat to open the driveway gate. The victim was standing near his mother’s vehicle when the driver got back into the SUV. Unbeknownst to the driver, the victim walked into the driveway below the driver’s line of sight. As the driver maneuvered into the driveway, the front bumper of the SUV impacted the victim, knocked him down, and the vehicle continued forward causing the fatal injuries.

Deputies on scene conducted an assessment of the driver. Neither alcohol or drugs is believed to be a factor in this collision. Neither the victim’s nor the driver’s identity is being released pending additional family notifications. The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Apple Valley Police Department’s – Major Accident Investigation Team.
