Who:          Sheriff Jim McDonnell; Captain James Tatreau, Lieutenant Tracy Stewart, and arresting deputies Scott Reynal and Martin Maciel, Norwalk Sheriff’s Station; Chief of School Safety, Elaine Williams, Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District; and Security Officer Marino Chavez, Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District.
 
What:         Sheriff McDonnell will discuss the circumstances surrounding a recent threat to commit a school shooting and prevention of a potentially dangerous outcome, thanks to attentive ears of school resource personnel and diligent investigators.
 
On Friday, February 16, 2018, Norwalk Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to El Camino High School, South Whittier, to investigate the circumstances surrounding a criminal threats call.  The deputies learned a school security officer overheard a disgruntled student threaten the occurrence of a shooting at the school. 
 
Investigation resulted in the collection of weapons and ballistic evidence from the student’s home, and the intervention of a potential threat to life.

Media parking at the Hall of Justice:  News media trucks are allowed to park on the sidewalks on Spring Street and Aliso Street adjacent to the Hall of Justice.  Media trucks should park as close to the street curb as possible, allowing ample room for pedestrian traffic.  Media trucks with satellite antennae should park in an area which allows plenty of overhead clearance.  For the purpose of fire and lifesaving reasons it is unlawful to block a driveway, stairwell, fire hydrant, or pedestrian walkway.
