21 year old driver receives minor injuries after crashing into the California Aqueduct

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at 2:44 AM

INCIDENT: Vehicle Crashes into California Aqueduct, Driver receives minor injuries

LOCATION: US Highway 395 / California Aqueduct, Hesperia

INVOLVED PARTY: Kevin Cabrera, 21, Victorville

SUMMARY:

On Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at approximately 2:44 am, deputies from the Hesperia Station along with San Bernardino County Fire personnel were dispatched to the AM/PM located on US Highway 395 and Three Flags Ct. An employee reported a male subject was at the location advising he was involved in a traffic collision where his vehicle went into the aqueduct.

Deputies arrived on scene and located a male subject which appeared to have cuts on his face. Through investigation, it was learned the male driver was northbound on US Highway 395 when he fell asleep and veered off the paved roadway. The vehicle collided with the barrier surrounding the aqueduct, continued through the barrier, crashing into the aqueduct.

The driver, a 21-year-old male, was able to exit his vehicle and grab onto a nearby buoy, pulling himself to safety. After exiting the water, the driver walked to the AM/PM to call for help. The driver was assessed by fire personnel but declined further treatment and was released to a family member on scene.

The Hesperia Sheriff’s Station in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team is currently putting together an action plan with the water district for the removal of the vehicle out of the aqueduct.
