Law Enforcement Impersonation Phone Scam

Law Enforcement Impersonation Phone Scam

This week Albany Police Department (APD) has received reports from citizens in Albany about a phone scam where the caller, from a 541 area code, identifies themselves as a Sergeant from the Sheriff’s Office. “Sergeant Cooper” or “Sergeant Carter” tries to convince the citizen that he or she has either failed to respond to a jury date or is wanted for various criminal offenses. Some citizens have called the number back and reached a fake voicemail box with a “Sheriff’s Office” greeting.

As a reminder, law enforcement agencies don’t call people on the phone to discuss missed court dates, demand fines, or threaten to arrest people. If we want to arrest you, we’ll probably just show up!

If you have contact with a person who purports themselves as law enforcement, but you suspect it’s not true, you can always stop by our office during business hours or give us a call and we can help confirm or deny.
