Update on Shooting Incident at 2527 Kiplands Way Drive

Feb. 16, 2018 – Evidence gathered through the investigation into a Jan. 31, 2018 shooting at 2527 Kiplands Way Drive has yielded preliminary information about the incident.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies responded to a disturbance call earlier that evening between a female complainant and her ex-husband, now identified as Matthew Vincent Cobb (DOB 03/28/82).

Cobb was subsequently located inside a home at 2527 Kiplands Way Drive in North Harris County.

Preliminary evidence indicates the following events transpired:
A male resident of the home allowed deputies Patrick Mirrielees and Juan Lerma inside and guided them to an upstairs bedroom, where they found Cobb alone in bed. Deputy Mirrielees handcuffed Cobb.

While Cobb was handcuffed, investigators believe Cobb retrieved a hidden hand gun and fired. The deputies and the other male resident fled the bedroom and headed toward the stairs. Cobb then went into a bathroom and fatally shot himself.

Deputy Lerma reached the bottom area of the staircase and turned back toward the stairs with his gun drawn. Deputy Lerma then fired, striking the other male resident multiple times.

Deputy Mierrielees was also wounded inside the home.

Investigators are awaiting results of ballistic and DNA testing to confirm these preliminary indications, which are subject to change.

This testing is also being performed to determine the source of the injuries sustained by Deputy Mirrielees.

Both Deputy Mirrielees and the other male resident survived and have been released from the hospital. A female occupant of the home was unharmed.

The incident remains under investigation and Deputy Lerma remains on administrative duty pending further review.
