Redondo Beach Police launches a new program called "Kid Kit"

The City of Redondo Beach is pleased to announce a new program called “Kid Kit.” The program will be introduced on February 20, 2018 at 6:00 PM, at the Redondo Beach City Council Meeting.
The Beryl Heights Elementary School Girl Scout Troop 2205 is hoping to bring a little comfort to children facing stressful situations by creating Kid Kits, which will be placed in Redondo Beach Police Department vehicles that respond to calls involving children that may be traumatize by certain incidents. These Kid Kits contain items for children of all ages, from babies to teenagers. Officers will offer items from the Kid Kits to children to help soothe and occupy them while the particular situation is being dealt with.
Last spring, as second graders, Troop 2205 met to plan how to use the proceeds from their cookie sales. As kindergartners and first graders the troop had used their money to help local charitable organizations. This year, however they hoped to create a project of their own. The girls wanted to help children in a time of need. They hoped they could spread happiness to children during circumstances that could be scary. They thought they could provide a gift to a child in a difficult situation that showed that someone cared and was thinking about them. Thus the idea of Kid Kits was born. Troop 2205 was excited to build this charity from the ground up and are looking forward to seeing it grow as they advance in Girl Scouting.
Each Kid Kit is made of a Pelican case filled with items for a variety of ages and interests to help a child take her/his mind off of the current situation. The small items range from fidget spinners to art projects, and action figures to stuffed animals. They even include handmade blankets for babies, made by the girls in Troop 2205. Thanks to a generous donation from Pelican Cases in Torrance, Kid Kits has enough cases to not only get this program off of the ground, but to maintain and hopefully expand it through the years. The troop will continue to restock the toys and other items with money they earn.
These Kid Kits will be taken into a variety of situations in which a child might need some comfort.
On February 20, 2018, Girl Scout Troop 2205 and the Redondo Beach Police Department will proudly “kick off” this project at the Redondo Beach City Council meeting. We hope to encourage other Girl Scout Troops to adopt this program in their cities. Troop 2205 will gladly work with and train any Girl Scout Troops interested in developing similar programs in their areas.
