Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 02-07-18 at 3:00 p.m., Officer Digiacomo was dispatched to the front counter of the police station to speak with someone who wanted to report a residential burglary. The reporting party told the officer that he is being stalked, and the suspects who broke into his house caused his father to have a heart attack and killed him. Because the reporting party was extremely talkative and sweating during his conversation with the officer, Officer Digiacomo asked Officer Perez to conduct tests to see if the reporting party was under the influence of a controlled substance. The reporting party, a 33-year old Daly City resident, was subsequently arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance. The reporting party’s father was contacted, and he said he did not have a heart attack and that his son has been acting paranoid lately.

On Wednesday, 02-07-18 at 3:30 p.m., a 14-year old Jefferson High School student was walking home from school and when she got to the intersection of Price Street and Lausanne Avenue, she said she passed by a parked silver Toyota Camry that was occupied by a Filipino male. She said the subject in the vehicle asked her a question, and because she couldn’t hear him, she walked closer to the vehicle. The student said the subject had a “smirk” on his face and asked her if she needed a ride. The student said she looked at him, looked down and noticed that the subject was “stroking” his genitals. The victim walked home and waited a day before reporting it to school authorities.

On Friday, 02-09-18 at 10:00 a.m., a 45-year old San Jose resident was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance and for an outstanding warrant for being under the influence of a controlled substance after he was found rolling in the bushes and screaming in a high pitched tone on the 7000 block of Mission Street.

On Friday, 02-09-18 at 11:50 a.m., Officer Hyink and Officer Grogan were dispatched to Northgate Avenue on a report of a male subject who was standing on the back of a fire truck. Officer Grogan arrived first and advised the subject to get off the truck. The subject then began walking towards San Francisco. A short time later, Officer Hyink saw the subject on the 100 block of Lake Merced Boulevard and asked him why he was there, and the subject said he was going to ask people at Westlake Park for money. The 26-year old subject from San Pablo consented to the officers to be searched and admitted to having “some drugs” in his jacket pocket. The subject had two pipes and methamphetamine in his possession. In addition to possessing those items, the subject had four credit cards and a driver's license belonging to someone else in his possession. He was cited for these offenses.

On Friday, 02-09-18 at 6:04 p.m., Officer Murillo conducted a vehicle check of an occupied vehicle at Serramonte Shopping Center, an area where numerous auto burglaries have recently occurred. The officer smelled an odor of marijuana from inside the vehicle. Officer Murillo noticed the male subject in the vehicle began to take deeper breaths and put his hands near the driver’s side door where the officer couldn’t see them. The female in the passenger seat had an outstanding warrant, and Officer Clinkscales arrived to assist and had the female step out of the vehicle. Officer Murillo asked the male subject if he had anything illegal in his vehicle, and the subject immediately looked at the female who was standing near the trunk. The subject admitted to having a firearm in the trunk. The male subject, a 25-year old Tiburon resident, was arrested for possession of a concealed-unregistered firearm and for possession of a concealed firearm. His friend, a 27-year old Pinole resident, was arrested for an outstanding warrant.

On Saturday, 02-10-18 at 3:03 a.m., Officer Cain was patrolling the parking structure at 245 Lake Merced Boulevard and saw a parked vehicle with two subjects sitting inside of the vehicle. Given the time of day, Officer Cain determined this to be suspicious. Prior to contacting the driver, Officer Cain noticed the subject in the driver’s seat was moving quickly and placing something underneath seat. The officer smelled marijuana as he approached the vehicle. It was later determined that the officer found cocaine underneath the seat. The 22-year old subject from Pacifica was cited for possession of cocaine and for destruction/concealing of evidence.

Scams/Other

U.S. Marshalls Scam

On Monday, 02-05-18 at 9:00 a.m., a 78-year old Pacifica resident received a call on her cell phone from a male who identified himself as “David Nelson” from the U.S. Marshall’s Service. The victim said the caller said they suspended her social security number due to several fraudulent transactions that occurred in Texas. The caller said the victim’s name and social security number were used to rent a Toyota Highlander, and it was found abandoned with blood inside in El Paso. The caller convinced the victim to withdraw all of her money from bank accounts and transfer the funds into two separate bank accounts. The caller gave the victim names and numbers of the accounts to that she would have access to the funds. The victim went to Wells Fargo and withdrew $10,000 and transferred $5,000 to each account. The victim found out through the bank that $5,000 was already taken from one account and then closed. The bank was able to freeze other account before the funds were taken from the account. It should be noted that this could have been avoided if the victim had only stopped to telephone the U.S. Marshall’s Service to determine the validity of the call.

Gold Bar Scam

On Wednesday, 02-07-18, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a 51-year old San Francisco resident was at Serramonte Shopping Center when a subject approached her and asked her if she knew where a jeweler was. The subject told the victim that his wife and children were the victims of a hit and run accident and had injuries. He told the victim that after the crash, the suspect accidentally dropped three small bags that contained gold bars, and he wanted to sell the bars to pay for the medical bills. A second subject came along, and together, they were able to convince the victim that it would be a good investment to buy the metal bar and later sell it for a much higher price. The victim drove to her bank with the subjects, and while the first subject stayed inside the victim’s vehicle, the second subject accompanied the victim inside the bank and stood by while she withdrew a large sum of money. After the victim paid for the metal bar, she said they all parted ways. The victim drove home and told her daughter about the incident, and they discovered the gold bar she bought was not real gold. The first subject is described as a dark skinned Hispanic male between 70-75 years old, approximately 5’4”, skinny build, dark hair and was last seen wearing a brown zip-up jacket, gray pants, brown sandals and carried a black briefcase. The second subject is described as a dark skinned Hispanic male, mid 30’s, approximately 5’6” to 5’8”, skinny build, dark hair, clean shaven, last seen wearing a black suit and tie. He had dark spots on his bottom teeth.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
