Advisory

See Something, Say Something

See Something, Say Something

In light of the recent school shooting in Florida, the Janesville Police Department and Janesville Area Crime Stoppers would like to remind citizens of the current technology in place in Rock County. Janesville Area Crime Stoppers funds P3tips, which is anonymous tip taking technology. Citizens can download the P3tips app by Anderson Software for Apple and Android phones, or go to P3tips.com and submit tips anonymously to law enforcement. All School districts in Rock County supported promoting P3tips in the schools to students. The P3tips app and P3tips.com give an anonymous voice to the students, staff, parents, and citizens in the community to report suspicious people, criminal activity that has occurred, and most importantly information on something that may be planned in the community. Law enforcement is well trained on responding to active criminal acts in our schools and other locations, but the most effective and important thing to do is to SAY SOMETHING prior to a tragic event occurring in our community. The P3tips app and P3tips.com allows people to upload information, pictures, videos, screen shots of social media posts, and audio files quickly. Tips that come in are monitored 24 hours a day by multiple law enforcement agencies to allow for quick communication and quick response once information is given.

Mental health is an issue with many of the past school shootings and other violent acts. A recent study conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum found that more than 50 percent of these attackers had broadcasted their intent prior to committing an act of violence. P3tips and P3tips.com has allowed friends of people in crisis to communicate with law enforcement anonymously, quickly, and effectively. Officers of the Janesville Police Department and many other law enforcement agencies in our area are trained in crisis intervention. JPD has a CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) that handles incidents that have some form of mental health component. Officers work with families and people in crisis to problem solve and to establish resources for persons in need. Many people do not like to speak with law enforcement in person. The anonymous component to P3tips and P3tips.com takes away the barrier that may exist between tipster and police.
