Millstadt Police Department Young Drivers Safety Program - List of Topics for March 3rd - Please Share Information

Here is a list of topics for our Young Drivers Safety Program:

Laws covering the Illinois Graduated Driver's License: It is imperative the young driver is familiar with the laws which affect them. This is an in-depth look at these laws, so they can avoid negative sanctions against their license.

Impaired driving: Impaired driving is a concern for every community. Not only will we look at the negative consequences from impaired driving, but open discussion will be held on how to reduce it.

Distracted driving: Technology has many benefits, but it also comes with a price. This topic takes a look at how the use of cell phones while driving, and other distractions in the vehicle, can have a negative impact.

Occupant restraint: Seat belts greatly reduce serious injury and fatalities. Although occupant restraint is at an all-time high, teenagers sometime disregard their use while with their peers.

Traffic stops: It is important everyone knows how to conduct themselves during a traffic stop. We will give some tips on how to reduce stress, should they get stopped by the police. They will also get a chance to understand a traffic stop through the officer's perspective, and realize why certain protocols are followed.

Situational awareness: This is a new topic for this year's program. We will take a look on how both the student and their parents can stay safe in public, by being aware of their surroundings.

Insurance information: An insurance agent will give a brief presentation on how to keep the cost of insurance down.

Impact speaker: Our impact speaker will speak on how a split-second of distraction by another motorist, resulted in her being seriously injured.

The students will also have a chance to navigate a golf cart, through the eyes of an impaired driver.

Along with being educational, we strive to make our program fun! All teens will receive attendance prizes, which will consist of restaurant gift cards. This program is also designed for the teens parents as well, and we strongly encourage at least one parent to attend. We will have free pizza and soda for everyone.

Who the program is designed for: Those ages 17 and under, who have a driver's license or driver's permit (or are reasonably close to having their permit).

When: Saturday, March 3rd; 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Where: Millstadt Consolidated School, 211 West Mill Street (use the main entrance).

The program is free, but reservations are highly recommended. For reservations or questions, please email Lt. Alan Hucke: [email protected]
