Narrative: | |||
In high-profile criminal cases, the public focus is often aimed primarily at the suspects, mainly because people seek to understand why criminals prey upon others in our communities. What people often forget are the victims of those crimes, whose suffering can continue well beyond the criminal act itself. In law enforcement, our mission is to seek justice for victims of crime, and we work with victims every day in the pursuit of justice for them. Part of that mission is to connect victims of violent crime with the resources that are available to them both locally and at the state level. Anyone who suffers physical injury or the threat of physical injury as a result of violent crime can apply for state assistance to help pay expenses for such things as medical and dental treatment, counseling, income loss, funeral and burial expenses, residential security, relocation and more. California was the first state to create a victim’s compensation program in 1965. Today, the California Victim Compensation Board administers funds collected through restitution and fines paid by criminal offenders. Those funds are disbursed to victims of violent crimes who apply for them. For information about the VCB and resources available to crime victims, visit the VCB website at https://victims.ca.gov. Additional local resources and information about the victim advocate program can be found at the Ventura County District Attorney’s website: www.vcdistrictattorney.com/victims/. |
