K9 Felony Apprehension

On 02-08-17 at 3:40 P.M., Janesville patrol officers responded to the area of W. Court St. and Cherry St. for the report of a subject in the area with outstanding warrants. Lynell J. Harris had been observed in the area by a citizen walking on foot. Harris had multiple outstanding misdemeanor and felony warrants for his arrest.

A responding officer observed Harris in the area and Harris subsequently fled the area on foot. A perimeter was established and a citizen alerted officers to Harris’ hiding in a residence in the 100 block of Cherry St. Officers maintained a perimeter on the residence. Harris had fled to the basement of the residence and hid from officers. Janesville Police Officer Drew Severson and his K9 partner Fred were requested to assist in locating Harris.

Harris was given several commands to surrender prior to K9 Fred’s deployment. K9 Fred was deployed into the basement area of the apartment and located Harris hiding behind some debris. Harris was bit by K9 Fred during the apprehension. K9 Fred maintained custody of Harris until officers were able to safely take Harris into custody. Harris suffered injuries from the bite and he received medical treatment at a local medical facility. No officers or K9 Fred were injured during the apprehension. Harris was held at the Rock County Jail on the outstanding warrants.
