Union City Police Crackdown on DUI’s nets four arrests

Over the past week Union City Police Officers have been cracking down on impaired driving.  As a result, four arrests were made.  Two were traffic stops by patrol officers, one came as a result of a call from a concerned citizen, and the last was involved in a collision.

Arrested for suspicion of D.U.I. were:

Tracy Lee Thompson – 48 year old of Modesto
Sione Siketi – 27 year old of Hayward
Teresa Ruth Velasquez – 50 year old of Hayward
Leonardo Rodrigo Calderonpena – 26 year old of Hayward

The Union City Police Department supports the effort from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) in an effort to educate all drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” Drug-impaired driving is a problem on California roadways. Like drunk driving, drugged driving is impaired driving, which means it is dangerous and illegal. Whether the drug is legally prescribed, an illicit drug or marijuana, driving while drug impaired poses a threat to drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other motorists.  Driving high can lead to a DUI and even worse the loss of life. While alcohol remains the main cause for DUI crashes, we support the effort from The California Office of Traffic Safety to raise awareness that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.”

Prescription medications and Marijuana can be impairing by themselves, or in combination with alcohol, and can result in a DUI arrest.

There are many other ways to ensure a safe ride home besides relying on a friend. The OTS DDVIP app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. The app offers enhanced features, allowing users to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California. Additionally, the app users can easily order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb.
