Advisory

Winter Storm Warning in effect tonight. 7-12 inches of snow expected.

Winter Storm Warning Calls For 7-12" Of Snow; Move Parked Cars Off The Street; Feb. 9 Garbage Update
The National Weather Service has declared a Winter Storm Warning for Kane County and much of Northeastern Illinois from 6 p.m. Feb. 8 until 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9. Please move parked cars from the street.

Advanced Disposal has informed the City that Geneva's garbage and recycling service will be postponed Friday, Feb. 9 due to expected severe weather conditions. Collection for Friday customers have been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10.

Geneva's Friday garbage customers should not place their cans out at the curb this evening since collection will not occur until Feb. 10.

Thursday garbage/recycling pickup is taking place as normal Feb. 8.

The storm could produce heavy snow ranging from 7 to 12 inches, while some areas across the region may see snow in excess of one foot. Travel conditions are anticipated to be difficult to impossible at times, including the morning rush hour Feb. 9.

The City's winter parking ban has been initiated for both designated snow routes and residential streets streets given the forecasted snow. Please move parked cars off the roadway so Geneva's plow operations can work more efficiently. Violators risk having their vehicle ticketed or towed. Street parking will be permitted once the snow has been plowed back to the curb.

Drivers should be prepared for reduced visibility at times. Geneva Police encourage motorists to drive slowly and leave plenty of room between other vehicles on the roadway. If people must travel, they should bring a cell phone, blanket, food and water in case of emergency.

Given the long duration of the storm, Geneva's Public Works Department will be out during the evening Feb. 8 plowing the main arterial roads. The City's small plow fleet is scheduled to create driving lanes on residential streets around 3 a.m. Feb. 9.

While the City will be plowing around the clock, the morning commute still is anticipated to be challenging. People should allow extra time to reach their destination. Plowing crews primary focus throughout the day Feb. 9 will be Geneva's main arterial roads.

Once the snow subsides late Feb. 9, crews will begin pushing snow back to the curb on all streets and expect to have that process wrapped up in the morning Saturday, Feb. 10. However, the parking ban may potentially be extended given another 1 to 3 inches of snow is in the preliminary weekend forecast for Feb. 10.

The City's contractor will be coming in overnight Feb. 8-9 to clean commuter and other public parking lots as best as possible prior to cars arriving. With snow still expected to fall during the day, the contractor will plow drive lanes in the parking lots with final cleanup taking place late Feb. 9.

Check back on the City's website, Facebook and Twitter for additional storm updates in the coming days.
