Increased Number Of Thefts From Mailboxes

During the week of February 4th, 2018, the Sausalito Police Department has received an increased number of reports regarding thefts from mailboxes. These thefts have occurred throughout Sausalito and in some cases have involved locked mailboxes being opened by force. The Sausalito Police Department is continuing to investigate these crimes and is requesting citizens with possible information regarding this crimes to contact us.

Due to these recent thefts, we would like to provide the public with some mail theft prevention tips:

• Use the letter slots inside your Post Office for your outgoing mail, or hand it to a letter carrier.
• Pick up your mail as soon as possible after delivery. Don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight. If you're expecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiable items, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.
• If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail you're expecting, contact the issuing agency immediately.
• Opt for an electronic W-2, if your employer offers it.
• If you change your address, immediately notify your Post Office and anyone with whom you do business via the mail.
• Don’t send cash in the mail.
• Tell your Post Office when you’ll be out of town and place a hold on your mail until you return.
• Report all suspected mail theft to the Sausalito Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspectors.

The Sausalito Police Department would like to remind the community to report any suspicious people or activity in their neighborhood. If you see something, say something.
