Transient arrested after setting coffee shop umbrella on fire
This Morning, around 4:45 am, the San Leandro Police Department received a call from a Starbuck's Coffee employee advising that a male subject had a market umbrella on fire in front of the business located at 13808 E. 14th Street.
When police and fire arrived on the scene, the umbrella was still burning. Firefighters extinguished the fire before it could spread to the business.
Officers located 62 yr-old Michael Norton who was standing in the vicinity of the business. The witness was able to identify Norton who was later arrested for intentionally starting the fire.
"Thankfully the coffee shop employee acted swiftly by calling for emergency assistance," said Lt. Isaac Benabou. "Police and Fire personnel arrived on scene quickly and were able to extinguish the fire and arrest the culprit."
Norton was taken SLPD Jail where he was booked for Arson, 451 (D) of the California Penal Code.
