Officers use Opioid Overdose Reversal Drug to Help Save Life

On January 26, 2018 at 12:46 PM, officers responded to a residence on Estates Drive to assist the Novato Fire Protection District on the report of a 32 year old male, who was not breathing and was in cardiac arrest. Novato Police Officer Brian Ringo arrived and determined that the male was suffering effects of a Heroin overdose. The patient had been given CPR and a dose of Naloxone (Narcan) by family members. Officer Ringo quickly assessed the patient and detected that he had a pulse, but was not responding as expected to the medication. Officer Ringo administered a second dose of Naloxone to the patient. The patient had an immediate positive response to the medication and showed instant signs of improvement in his condition. Novato Fire arrived at the residence and transported the patient to Novato Community Hospital, where he received further treatment for his condition. It was reported that the patient was conscious and answering questions during his ride to the hospital. At this time, the patient is expected to survive.

In June 2017, Novato Police Department officers began carrying Naloxone (Narcan) and since then our officers have already saved one life. This instance would be the second. In October of 2017, President Trump declared a public health emergency to deal with the Opioid epidemic. More than 140 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All our officers have been trained in the use of Naloxone (Narcan) and carry it with them in the field. We work in partnership with RX Safe Marin to train and educate the public on the dangers of Opioid addiction and responses to overdose.
