San Leandro Police vehicle rammed by fleeing suspect in stolen car

This morning, just before 8:00 A.M., San Leandro police officers on patrol received a "stolen vehicle beacon" that was emitting from a stolen vehicle in the area of Davis St and Timothy Drive.

Officers began searching the area and located the stolen vehicle, a 2011 Cadillac sedan, parked in the parking lot of the Westgate Shopping center. The vehicle was occupied by two adults, a male, and female. SLPD units attempted to take the two subjects into custody by giving them commands to exit the vehicle. Rather than complying with the officer's orders, the male driver started the stolen vehicle and sped away.

Officers began to pursue the stolen vehicle through the parking lot and out onto Timothy Drive. While evading officers, the suspect driver clipped the rear end of another vehicle in the roadway. The suspect driver continued to flee, driving the stolen vehicle into a residential neighborhood.

The suspect driver led officers to the 600 blk of Tudor Ct., a dead end street. Once there the suspect turned the stolen vehicle around and drove head-on towards a marked San Leandro Police patrol vehicle and collided with the front end in an attempt to escape. The stolen vehicle then lost control and veered into a power pole where it came to rest. Fortunately, the police officer was uninjured in the collision.

Incoming officers were able to detain both the suspect driver and passenger with any further incident. Neither the driver nor passenger sustained any injuries from the collision, however, both were taken to area hospitals for evaluation prior to jail.

SLPD Officers attempted to locate and contact the motorist that was struck by the fleeing suspect, but the vehicle left the area prior to police arrival. The vehicle struck was described as a "white transit van."

"We are thankful that no one was seriously injured in this event," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "This was a deliberate act by the suspect to ram our officer in an attempt to escape. The suspect will now face multiple felony charges."

The stolen vehicle was reported stolen to the Fremont Police Department on today's date, the circumstances surrounding the theft is unknown at this time.

Investigators are asking for anyone with information regarding this morning's incident, including the white transit van that was struck, to please contact the San Leandro Police Department at 510-577-2740.
