On Wednesday, August 24, 2017, the parents of the 14-year-old victim discovered evidence of inappropriate communication between a Nueva School employee, identified as Ian Thomas Whiteman, and the victim. The parents notified school administration, who immediately took action by placing Whiteman on administrative leave and notifying the San Mateo Police Department (SMPD). Whiteman worked at both the San Mateo and Hillsborough campuses of the school.
A lengthy investigation resulted in a $150K arrest warrant being issued for Whiteman. On Friday, January 19, 2017, Whiteman appeared in San Mateo County Superior Court and he self-surrendered. There is no evidence or any other indication of any more victims. The Nueva School administration worked closely with investigators and cooperated with the SMPD throughout investigation.
This case highlights the effectiveness of the close and collaborative relationship between the San Mateo Police Department and all San Mateo public and private schools as part of ongoing commitment to keeping students safe.
