Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 01-09-18 at 12:47 a.m., a 21-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after being involved in a solo vehicle collision in the area of Midvale Avenue and Lakeshire Drive.

On Thursday, 01-11-18 at 3:57 p.m., Officer Ortiz and Officer Hepler were dispatched to the Smart and Final store on a report of a male subject carrying a vodka bottle who was walking around the front entrance and parking lot, moving shopping carts and bothering customers. Officers found a subject matching the description a short distance away, and the subject appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. The subject was on court probation with a search and seizure condition, and he had several drug related offenses. Officers searched the subject’s backpack and found car insurance information not belonging to the subject. The subject spontaneously told the officers that he didn’t take things from cars. The officers conducted tests to see if the subject, a 45-year old San Jose resident, was under the influence, and he was booked into jail.

On Friday, 01-12-18 between 10:00 a.m. and 10:26 a.m., an unknown suspect took the victim’s purse while at the Planet Fitness facility and then used her credit card at the Chevron gas station on Hickey Boulevard in Daly City. This investigation is continuing.

On Friday, 01-12-18 at 11:05 a.m., Officer Castillo was dispatched to the 400 block of 89th Street on a report of a man in his 20’s who was riding his bicycle around the neighborhood and looking into car windows. Officer Castillo stopped a subject matching the description, and the subject denied looking into the vehicles. Other officers responded to assist, and Officer Castillo asked the subject if he had any weapons on him, and the subject said he had a pocket knife. The officer then asked if the subject had anything else illegal on him, and the subject said no. The officer advised he would be conducting a pat search for more weapons due to the subject’s oversized coat. The subject became extremely nervous and tried to avoid being pat searched. Officer Castillo found a sunglass case in the subject’s back pocket and asked what was inside the case. The subject admitted he had a pipe. The officer asked if he had any drugs on him, and the subject said they were inside the sunglass case. The subject had cocaine and heroin inside the sunglass case, and he also had cards not belonging to him in his possession. The subject said he “doesn’t break into cars and was just holding on to things he found”. The 42-year old San Francisco resident was cited for possession of cocaine, heroin and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

On Saturday, 01-13-18 at 2:32 a.m., a 31-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol following a non-injury traffic collision on the 1200 block of Brunswick Street.

On Saturday, 01-13-18 at approximately 4:11 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Dockside Drive on a report of a subject who stole tools from a shed in the backyard. A neighbor saw an unknown male in the driveway of the vacant residence next door. This same subject apparently broke a window the week before, and the reporting party said the owner didn’t want anything done as he was planning to remodel the residence. A short time later, the reporting party’s daughter saw a man in the backyard throwing a bag over the fence. They went to the backyard and at first glance didn’t see anyone but then saw a subject lying down in the bushes behind their residence. The reporting party realized it was the same subject he saw earlier and saw one of his tools directly behind his fence. When the reporting party entered the area to get the tool, he said the subject got up and ran down the hill. The reporting party then found more of his tools which had been stored in his shed and were now piled up behind his neighbor’s house. The reporting party got into his car and drove around the neighborhood looking for the subject but could not find him. A couple hours after he arrived home, the reporting party’s brother-in-law saw the subject, and officers were dispatched to the area again and found a subject matching the description. The reporting party positively identified the 25-year old transient subject, and officers arrested him for burglary and for two outstanding warrants.

Scams/Other

Apartment Rental Scam

On Friday, 01-12-18, a 30-year old San Francisco resident reported that she was the victim of a fraud by a subject who posed as a property manager for an apartment that had no association to the address. The victim said a week prior, she was browsing Craig’s list for rental properties and found a listing for an apartment on the 600 block of Sylvan Avenue. The victim contacted the renter who identified himself as “Nathaniel Turker” and gave his telephone number. When she called him, the victim said the ring tone sounded “odd”, but that since she was excited about the apartment, she didn’t give it much thought. The victim said “Mr. Turker” told her to fill out an application and e-mailed it to him. A week later, the victim said the subject called and asked her for a $1000 security deposit. The victim told him it was too much, and the subject told her to wire him $500. The victim said the next day the subject called her saying that another person was willing to pay the full amount if she wasn’t willing to match it. The victim then transferred $1250 to the same account number. “Mr. Turker” told the victim once the money was wire transferred, he would meet her at the apartment to do a walk through. Once the victim got off the phone, she became suspicious and looked up the property on the internet. She obtained a phone number for the property manager and asked what units were available, and the manager told her the apartment she was looking at was occupied an unavailable. The victim asked the manager if “Nathaniel Turker” worked for him, and he said he never heard of the name.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
