Lake County Invites Comments on their Hazard Mitigation Plan

Lake County, CA: Lake County is completing an update to their 2012 Local Hazard Mitigation Plan. Flood, drought, wildfire, earthquakes, and severe weather are just a few of the hazards to Lake County. While natural hazards such as these cannot be prevented, a Hazard Mitigation Plan forms the foundation for a community's long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses by breaking the repeated cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction. Additionally, only communities with a FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plan are eligible to apply for both pre- and post-disaster mitigation grant funding.

Another benefit of this plan update is to enhance the floodplain management program of Lake County. This can help reduce the costs of flood insurance to residents through a jurisdiction’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS).

The process began in June 2017 with an initial public and planning meeting and the establishment of a planning committee comprised of representatives from the County, Cities, special districts, other key stakeholders, and the public. The plan is scheduled to be finalized and submitted to Cal OES and FEMA in February 2018.
