On the evening of December 15, 2017, there was a small gathering of people in the area of Avenida Del Platino and Calle Diamonte in Newbury Park. The gathering was described as an informal memorial service for David Smith who was shot and killed in the same area on November 30, 2017. During the assault one victim was cut with a sharp object, another suffered a serious injury to his mouth and the third was badly beaten. The victims with the cut wound and mouth injury were both transported to the Los Robles Hospital where they were treated for their injuries and released. The subsequent investigation led to the identification of four suspects who were involved in the assault and one suspect who made statements during the incident intended to intimidate the victims and prevent them from cooperating with the police. On January 4, 2018, Jessica Macias and a male juvenile were arrested in Newbury Park for assault with a deadly weapon and gang allegation charges.
