DATE/TIME: January 13, 2018

INCIDENT: FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION

LOCATION: MARIPOSA ROAD / MOJAVE STREET, HESPERIA

INVOLVED PARTY 1: ADULT MALE, PENDING POSITIVE ID

INVOLVED PARTY 2: ADULT MALE, PENDING POSITIVE ID

SUMMARY:

On January 13, 2018, at approximately 8:33 pm, deputies from the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department were dispatched to a head on major injury traffic collision that occurred on Mariposa Road near Mojave Street in the City of Hesperia. Deputies and Fire personnel arrived on scene and found two vehicles, a 2015 Kia Forte and a 2003 Buick Century that were involved in the collision. Both adult male drivers were suffering from major injuries and the driver of the 2003 Buick was trapped inside the vehicle due to the damage from the collision. Despite first responders lifesaving efforts, the driver of the Buick died at the scene. The driver of the Kia was extricated from his vehicle and flown to ARMC by helicopter, where he remains in critical condition.

Based on physical evidence found at the scene, investigators believe that the driver of the 2003 Buick was traveling north on Mariposa Road when for unknown reasons crossed over into the south bound lane of travel, striking the south bound Kia head on. The impact caused major damage to both vehicles and blocked both north and south bound lanes of travel.

The Hesperia Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is conducting the investigation and Mariposa Road was closed in both directions until approximately 2:00 am while investigators collected evidence. It remains under investigation whether alcohol contributed to the cause of this collision.

The investigation is on-going and anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy Scott LaFond or Sergeant Doug Hubbard from the Hesperia Sheriff's Station at (760) 947-1500
