1/09 - 2:35 a.m. - Police stopped a vehicle for multiple traffic violations, in the 300 block of South Jefferson Street. During an investigation, the officer believed there to be illegal drugs in the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, a handgun was discovered. The officer learned the driver was a convicted felon. Later, a large amount of suspected illegal drugs was found on the driver's person. On the 10th, the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office charged the suspect, Leon J. Carraway Jr., age 30 of East St. Louis. According to the charging documents he was charged with the following: Count 1: Unlawful Possession with the Intent to Deliver Controlled Substance, in that he possessed with the intent to deliver 15 grams or more but less that 100 grams of a substance containing heroin. A Class X Felony. Count 2: Unlawful Possession with the Intent to Deliver Controlled Substance, in that he possessed with the intent to deliver 1 gram or more but less that 15 grams of a substance containing cocaine. A Class 1 Felony. Count 3: Unlawful Possession of Firearm by a Felon, in that he knowingly possessed a .25 caliber handgun, and the person had previously been convicted of Residential Burglary. A Class 2 Felony. His bond was set at $150,000. The St. Clair County Drug Tactical Unit assisted with this case.
