GTPD Media Advisory: Multijurisdictional Response to Barricaded Person After Shots Fired At Officers By Assault Rifle.

On Wednesday January 10th at approximately 8:05 PM the Gloucester Township Police responded to 10 Hampshire Road in the Sicklerville Section of Gloucester Township for a report of a person who shot multiple rounds from a firearm outside of the home. Upon arrival, officers heard gun fire and proceeded to take a cover position.

Numerous additional on duty officers and the Gloucester Township Police Special Response Team (SWAT) responded and took a position in front of the residence with the Armored Rescue Vehicle.  The subject then fired more than 15 rounds at the officer located inside of the Armored Rescue Vehicle causing damage to the windshield any numerous markings to the armor of the rescue vehicle. No officers were injured.

Throughout the incident the Gloucester Township Police Crisis Negotiators attempted to have the subject surrender to police but were met with negative results and at times additional gunfire. Telephone contact was made with the male subject and after numerous conversations he refused to answer the phone.  After Approximately ten hours of attempted negotiations the Armored Rescue Vehicle was used to remove the front door of the residence.  Camden County Sheriff’s Department Search Robots were used to attempt to clear the residence.

The SRT and SERT eventually made entry into the townhouse and located a male and female.  The female was not injured but the 24 year old male party was found deceased.  Law Enforcement did not fire any rounds or exchange in gun fire with the subject.  A handgun and assault rifle were located inside the residence.

The Gloucester Township Police Department Special Response Team with the assistance of the Camden County Sheriffs Department SERT Team removed residents from the adjacent homes utilizing both Gloucester Township Police Armored Rescue Vehicle and the Camden County Sheriff’s Department Armored Rescue Vehicle.  Approximately 10 townhomes and 18 residents were safely evacuated to Erial Fire Station by the Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management.  Once the situation was completed, residents were escorted back to their homes.  We thank everyone for following our request and remaining sheltered in place or clear of the area during this critical incident.

This is another example of teamwork between multijurisdictional agencies.  The Camden County Prosecutors Office, FBI, Camden County Sheriffs Department SERT Team, Camden County Communications, Erial Fire Department, Lambs Terrace Fire Department, Gloucester Township EMS, Virtua Paramedics, Cherry Hill Rehab 13, Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management,  Camden County Office of Emergency Management, Canteen 1 and 2 and Camden County Fire Police are worked jointly to manage this event.
