SMPD Arrests Package Thief Thanks to Vigilant Community Member

SMPD arrested a package thief in possession of stolen property thanks to a call from an alert resident, and the use of home security video.

On Tuesday, January 9th, 2018, at about 2:20 p.m. San Mateo Police communications received a call from a resident who said he saw a man walking in the area of State St and Delaware St. The resident recognized the man from his security video stealing packages off of his porch several days prior.  Officers quickly arrived in the area and located the man who was identified as San Francisco transient 36-year-old Tommy Galia.  Galia possessed a package addressed to a local resident and additional property that appeared not to belong to him. After thorough investigation, Galia was ultimately arrested for theft, possession of stolen property, and multiple warrants. Galia was later transported to San Mateo County Jail.

The suspected stolen property Galia possessed was collected for observation and photos of the property was posted to SMPD’s Pinterest for viewing: https://www.pinterest.com/sanmateopd/property-for-viewing/. If you had a package stolen from your porch, please review the property list and contact Officer Jeffrey Emley if you can identity any of the items that may potentially belong to you.  Contact info:jemley@cityofsanmateo.org 650-522-7700.

We wanted to take a moment to thank the observant resident that partnered with SMPD to capture this thief and potentially prevented additional crimes within the city.  The resident’s use of home security video and sharing of it with SMPD was a crucial factor in this timely arrest. The resident did not confront the man, but instead kept a good distance and immediately called 911 to report the information.  This is a great example of how our community and police officers work seamlessly together to send a message to criminals that we don’t stand for crime in our city! Kudos and thank you.
