8 Drunk Drivers Arrested During Grant Funded Crackdown In Gloucester Township

The Gloucester Township Police Department (GTPD) recently completed the statewide 2017 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” driving while intoxicated enforcement campaign. This campaign took place between December 8 and January 1, 2018, that was part of a national effort to raise the awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving. As part of the initiative, the GTPD was awarded a $5,500.00 grant by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. During this enforcement campaign, 8 drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated, 1 driver was arrest for drug related charges, 43 drivers received summonses for driving with a suspended driver's license, 6 drivers summoned for reckless driving and 29 drivers were cited for careless driving.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is just one facet of the GTPD efforts to deter drinking and driving. The department conducts monthly coordinated patrols targeting intoxicated drivers, and conducts pre-prom drinking and driving education programs for their high school students. Every day, 28 people in the United States die in an alcohol-related vehicle crash—that's one person every 51 minutes. Drunk driving fatalities have fallen by a third in the last three decades; however, drunk driving crashes claim more than 13,000 lives per year. These deaths and damages contribute to a cost of $52B per year.

Below are NHTSA’s recommended safe alternatives to drinking and driving:

Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation to get home safely.

Download NHTSA’s SaferRide mobile app that allows users to call a taxi or a predetermined friend, and identifies the user’s location so he or she can be picked up.

If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

Have a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.
