Lancaster Sheriff's Station Safety Tips: Driving on a Rainy Day 
Happy Rainy Monday! This rainy weather comes in just in time for us to share our Rainy Day Driving Safety Tips!
1. Turn on those headlights. It's the law in all states to turn on headlights when visibility is low, and many states, California included, it is also required to have the headlights on when the windshield wipers are in use. Daytime running lights do not count as “headlights”.
2. When driving on the freeway, drive in the center lanes as water tends to pool in the outside lanes.
3. Well-working wipers and relatively new (not threadbare) tires are must-haves when driving in rain.
4. Increase your following distance and watch for brake lights ahead.
5. Slow down – it takes longer to stop in wet weather. Plus the faster you drive, the greater the chances of hydroplaning.
6. Drive slowly through any puddle of uncertain depth. That way if it’s deeper than you thought, you can still back out! And never drive through moving water if you can’t see the ground through it – you could be swept right off the road.
Be sure you give yourself plenty of extra time to get where you’re going and get there safely! Lastly, most Antelope Valley kids went back to school today after the Winter Break. Please, please, give yourself enough time to drop them off/pick them up and SLOW DOWN in and around school zones. Don't let yourself get frustrated by other drivers and cause a tragic accident near our schools. Watch out for those little ones!
