Officers Save Unresponsive Woman from House Fire

Two Suffolk County Police officers rescued a woman from a burning home in Shirley early this morning.

Seventh Precinct officers responded to a home on Rockledge Drive at 6:38 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a fire at the location. When officers arrived, the homeowner, Joyce Kenna, informed officers that her daughter was still in a bedroom inside the home.

Officers Kevin Csoka and William Erdman, with the assistance of Officer Neil Nunberg, entered the home through a window. Officers found the woman in bed, unresponsive. The three officers removed the woman from the home through the window.

Joyce Kenna, 70, and Susan Kenna, 42, were both transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Officers Erdman and Csoka were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

A preliminary investigation by Arson Section detectives and the Brookhaven Fire Marshal has determined the cause of the fire to be non-criminal.
