Between 14,500 and 17,500 people are trafficked into the U.S. each year. Human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry (behind illegal drugs and arms trafficking). It reportedly generates a profit of $32 billion every year. Of that number, $15.5 billion is made in industrialized countries.

The Simi Valley Chapter of Soroptimist International is sponsoring a free informational seminar on Stop Human Trafficking Awareness Day, Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 6:30 pm. This free event will be held at Santa Susana High School and will feature guest speaker Stacey Jewell, a survivor of human trafficking, as well as a panel discussion featuring prominent law enforcement and social services officials.

Today, human trafficking takes many forms. Cases may involve migrants (both documented and undocumented), the exploitation of children who have run away from home to escape abuse, and the abuse of developmentally disabled adults who are forced to work for long hours with little pay.

Unfortunately, trafficking victims don’t always see themselves as victims, often blaming themselves for their situation. This makes discovering the crime more difficult for law enforcement because victims rarely self-report.

Participate in drawing attention to this modern day slavery by attending this event and becoming more educated and involved. Doors to this event will open at 6:00 pm and seating will be limited.
