On Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, at approximately 11:46 p.m., officers responded to Newport Boulevard and 17th Street regarding a Ford truck towing a boat versus a pedestrian traffic collision. The male pedestrian was attempting to cross Newport Boulevard, north of 17th Street when he was hit by the truck. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the deceased is being withheld until next of kin is notified. The driver of the vehicle, as well as witnesses, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. The Costa Mesa Police Major Accident Investigation Team was activated and Newport Boulevard was closed off between 17th and 18th Street for several hours before it was reopened.
