The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives continue to investigate a Deputy-Involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, December 10, 2017, at approximately 9:26 p.m., in the 11900 block of Droxford Street, Artesia.
 
Lakewood Station deputies responded to the location regarding a “suspicious person in a vehicle” call.  Further information in the call stated that a man driving a SUV was looking into parked vehicles. A second call for service indicated the male drove onto a lawn and abandoned the SUV. The male was seen fighting with an unknown person and the male was last seen walking away from the area.
 
Deputies arrived on scene and located the suspect between two residences at the location. The suspect was uncooperative, physically attacked deputies, and a fight ensued.
 
During the fight, the deputies attempted to tase the suspect; however, the taser was not effective. The suspect armed himself with a knife and used the knife to cut two of the deputies in their hands, at which time a Deputy-Involved shooting occurred.
 
The suspect was struck at least one time in the torso. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
 
The suspect is described as a 49 year-old, male Hispanic.
 
Two deputies were transported to a local hospital, where they are receiving treatment for their injuries.

Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in the wounding of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. The mission of the Office of Inspector General is to provide strong, independent and effective oversight of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and to ensure transparent, accountable and constitutional policing for the County of Los Angeles. The Critical Incident Review panel convenes to perform a preliminary risk management analysis of the shooting. This panel is comprised of the concerned chief and unit commander, risk management and training personnel, the chairperson of the Executive Force Review Committee, and a representative from the Office of the Los Angeles County Counsel. Every aspect of a Deputy-Involved shooting is ultimately evaluated by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee, which determines whether there are any policy, tactical, supervisory, or training violations or concerns. The Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney also participates in the investigatory process and conducts a legal analysis of the shooting.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives are responding to the area of Droxford Street and Elaine Avenue, Artesia, to investigate the circumstances surrounding a Deputy Involved Shooting. 

Two deputies were injured during the incident and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The deputies were not struck by gunfire. 

The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. His condition is unknown at this time. 
 
The investigation is ongoing.
