Modesto, CA – Officers are investigating a traffic collision that claimed the lives of two Modesto women.

At about 8:20 p.m. yesterday, emergency services personnel responded to a report of a roll over traffic collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Tully and Rumble Roads. Upon arrival, first responders worked to remove the injured driver and passenger from the overturned vehicle. The 54-year-old passenger, Sherri Cooley, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, 21-year-old Megan Cooley, was rushed to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Officers with the Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They were able to determine that a 2006 Mercedes sedan was traveling northbound on Tully at a high rate of speed. As the Mercedes approached the intersection of Rumble, it collided with the passenger side of a 2003 Ford Escape, which was making a left (eastbound) turn onto Rumble. The Ford flipped over and came to rest about 168 feet north of the intersection. The 16-year-old female driver of the Mercedes and her two teen male passengers were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. After the 16-year-old driver was medically cleared, she was booked into Juvenile Hall for two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while under the influence.
