Janesville Police Department Encouraging Citizens To Lock Their Vehicles
The Janesville Police Department would like to remind citizens to lock their cars and remove all valuables to prevent thefts from vehicles. A rash of these incidents has plagued our community in recent weeks.
The Janesville Police Department has responded to 370 thefts from motor vehicles so far in 2017. Police believe most of these thefts could have been prevented if the vehicle would have been locked. In the vast majority of these cases, thieves have entered an unlocked vehicle to steal the property from inside. Rarely have officers investigated cases of thefts from locked vehicles in which the perpetrator has forced entry into the car by breaking a window.
In 2 of these cases, firearms have been taken from the vehicles and have yet to be recovered. It is advised to remove valuables and firearms from the vehicle when parking overnight. If at all possible, park your vehicle in a secure garage. If that is not possible, lock your vehicle and park it in a well-lit area. The police department anticipates another spike in thefts from vehicles over the holidays. Remember to hide your purchases and gifts in the vehicle or, if at all possible, in the vehicle’s trunk.
Thefts from motor vehicles can be prevented. Lock your vehicles and report suspicious activity to the police department. The Janesville Police Department encourages citizens to call the non-emergency number 757-2244 or to report suspicious activity anonymously using the P3tips app. Citizens can download the FREE “P3 tips” app at the Apple store or Google Play store to submit crime tips.
