Temple City to Offer $100 Rebates on Ring Video Doorbells

TEMPLE CITY TO SUBSIDIZE HOME SECURITY INSTALLATIONS
City partners with Ring for reduced pricing on new video doorbells.

TEMPLE CITY, CA (Nov. 28, 2017)—In the wake of a recent surge in home break-ins, the city council on Tuesday approved a $40,000 rebate program to subsidize the purchase of Ring video doorbells, which have been shown to reduce residential burglaries by more than 50 percent.

Each Ring video doorbell contains a camera that links to its user’s smartphone, tablet or desktop computer. Once the camera is activated by the doorbell or its motion sensors, residents can see, hear and speak to visitors remotely from their devices.

The city will offer a $50-per-household subsidy, which will be matched by the Santa Monica-based company for a total $100 rebate for each Temple City customer who purchases a unit through the company’s website using a special promotional code.

“The safety of our citizens is of paramount importance,” said Temple City Mayor Cynthia Sternquist. “The success of the video doorbell in nearby communities compelled us to partner with Ring to better enable our residents to proactively protect their property at a reduced price.”

When the Los Angeles Police Department subsidized Ring video doorbells in Wilshire Park in 2015, the neighborhood saw a 55-percent reduction in residential burglaries after six months. The cities of Arcadia, Commerce and La Canada Flintridge have recently established similar programs.

Temple City’s program reduces the cost of the video doorbells from their regular pricing of between $199 and $249 to between $99 and $149, depending on the model selected. The program also includes a $30 discount on additional cameras and doorbell units, plus a 20-percent discount on accessories.

City officials are in the process of signing the rebate agreement with Ring, which will mark the start of the promotional offer. The rebates will be available to Temple City residents on a first-come, first-served basis until the subsidy runs out.
