Texas Avenue Incident Results in 2 Arrests

Friday’s hours-long SWAT callout on Texas Avenue resulted in the arrests of two wanted individuals, but one other apparently fled the residence without detection.

Jose “Josh” Herrera, 35, and 24-year-old Brianna Juarez were arrested during the incident. Herrera was wanted on a failure to appear warrant out of magistrate court and is also charged with one count of resisting or obstructing an officer. Juarez was wanted on six municipal court warrants and two district court bench warrants – both for violating terms of her probation.

Arthur “Art” Orozco, 35, remains outstanding and has a felony warrant for his arrest for violating terms of his probation.

At about 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, officers went to the residence on the 700 block of Texas Avenue to serve warrants on Herrera and Orozco. Police made contact with Herrera outside the residence but he fled from officers and entered the home where he immediately barricaded himself behind closed doors. Orozco was also believed to be inside the residence along with at least one other individual.

The Las Cruces Police Department’s SWAT team was activated along with assistance from members from the New Mexico State Police SWAT team, LCPD’s K-9 Unit and LCPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team. Juarez was detained without incident but Herrera remained barricaded inside the residence until shortly after 4 p.m. when he exited and was taken into custody.

The SWAT team introduced gas into the residence and made entry into the home sometime after 6 p.m. No one else was located inside the home. Police are still looking for Orozco. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Arthur “Art” Orozco is asked to call 911. If tipsters wish to remain anonymous they may call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Herrera and Juarez are incarcerated at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. Herrera is being held on a $4,000 bond while bond for Juarez is set at $15,000.
