PRESS RELEASE - Barricade Armed Suspect Arrested
Sunnyvale, CA. - On November 17th, at approximately 12:55 p.m., Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety personnel responded to the 200 block of E. Evelyn Ave on the report of a domestic violence incident. The 34-year-old female victim reported that her husband, 39-year-old Riyad Bacchus had attacked her and pointed a gun at her. She fled the apartment and called 911. Bacchus remained in the apartment with their 3-year-old son. Officers surrounded the location and started evacuating surrounding apartments. Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) members contacted Bacchus, who initially refused to come out. After approximately 45 minutes of negotiating Bacchus came out of the apartment unarmed with his son. He gave his son to officers and surrendered without further incident. A loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun was found in the apartment. A second handgun was later found in the apartment.
The victim was transported to a local hospital for her injuries. She was treated and later released. Her 3-year-old son was not injured during the apprehension.
Bacchus was booked into County jail for attempted murder, attempted kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, sexual assault, child abuse, false imprisonment and domestic violence.
The case is under investigation by Sunnyvale DPS detectives.
