Update: Dexter found safe, verified and returned to owner; investigation continues

Around 5:30 p.m., Dispatch received a call from Anchorage Animal Care and Control that Dexter may have been dropped off. When officers arrived, they interviewed an adult male who said he found the dog from the Nixle. Officers called the victim to return to AACC and complete the verification process. Due to the mistaken identity situation from earlier this morning, AACC and APD took additional steps to verify this was in fact Dexter. Once the final step was taken, Dexter was released to the victim.
The adult male who dropped Dexter off at AACC is not a suspect. Officers are following up on the information he provided to solve this crime.
The investigation continues.
Update 1:41 p.m.:
Just before 9 a.m. this morning, Dispatch received a call from Anchorage Animal Care and Control that Dexter may have been dropped off early this morning. An officer responded and called the victim to complete the verification process. However, the puppy returned to the victim was a female puppy, not a male puppy. The puppy has since been returned to Anchorage Animal Care and Control. The search continues for Dexter (who is a male puppy), the suspect and suspect vehicle.
Update 11/17/17:
A 2nd photo has been added of Dexter.

If anyone finds any social media posts about a puppy for sale matching Dexter's description, please call Dispatch at 907-786-8900.

Additionally, anyone wanting a dog should contact Anchorage Animal Care and Control instead of stealing one. There are multiple dogs available for adoption who are in need of a good home.
