On 11-8-17 the Pomona Police Department held an awards ceremony to recognize individual Department members and citizens who have distinguished themselves through heroism, or extraordinary dedicated service to the Department or the City of Pomona.
The following story is related to Officer Jeff Hayward being awarded the Lifesaving Medal.

On July 26, 2016 Pomona Police Dispatch received a report of a choking victim at the Los Jarritos Restaurant on N. Garey Avenue. Officer Jeff Hayward responded Code 3 and arrived within 4 minutes of receiving the call. When Hayward found the victim, he was unconscious, on the ground, blue, and showing signs of being close to death. Patrons at the restaurant told Hayward they had attempted the Heimlich maneuver on the victim, but it did not work and he had fallen to the ground. Hayward immediately attempted a modified Heimlich maneuver while the man was still lying on the floor. This action cleared the victim’s airway and he began breathing on his own. He regained consciousness prior to being transported to the hospital.
Captain Judd with the LA County Fire Department was also on scene. He commented, that from the time he saw Officer Hayward driving northbound on Garey Ave, he knew he was motivated to get to the call and render aid. Without Officer Hayward’s immediate action, there was a high likelihood that the victim would have passed away, due to the amount of time that had already passed.
Officer Jeff Hayward was awarded the Lifesaving Medal for his actions.
