On November 12th 2017 the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Communication Center started receiving 911 calls in reference to multiple B & E’s to motor vehicles, with the first report coming in at 04:02am.
While deputies were out taking these reports, Deputy Jeff Burgess was taking a report for a stolen Chrysler 200.
As Deputy Burgess was taking the report for the stolen vehicle, dispatch gave out a call for suspicious persons on Grover Wilson Road.
Deputy Burgess left from that residence to go and check out the suspicious persons call. As Deputy Burgess was traveling tothe Grover Wilson road address he noticed a Chrysler 200 matching that from the one reported stolen. Deputy Burgess initiated his blue lights at Gilboa Church Road and Hwy 221-N; at which time the Chrysler 200 turned onto Hwy 221N heading south. The vehicle picked up speed and accelerated to speeds higher than the posted speed. The vehicle passed another vehicle on double yellow lines on the highway still traveling south on Hwy 221N. The Chrysler 200 slowed down as if it was going to turn onto Roper Loop road but then continued traveling south on Hwy 221N. The Chrysler 200 then proceeded to travel south on221N and then slowed as if it was going to turn onto Broyhill Road but then passed Broyhill road but eventually turned onto Old 221. Once the Chrysler 200 turned onto Old 221, the Chrysler 200 wrecked and hit a BellSouth box on the right hand side of the road, then crossed over and hit a ditch and finally stopped. Once the Chrysler 200 had stopped due to hitting the ditch, two black males exited the vehicle and began running on foot. Deputy Burgess then began a foot chase with the two male subjects. Deputy Ryan Bailey was able to arrive and began chasing the two subjects as well.

The two subjects continued to run on foot away from Deputy Burgess and Bailey. Other deputies, Rutherfordton Police Department Officers, Spindale Police Department Officers and NCSHP arrived in the area and set up a perimeter.
Rutherford County Communications began receiving calls from residents stating that they had seen two male subjects dressed in dark clothing matching the description of the two subjects.
K-9 officers from Cleveland County responded to assist in locating the two subjects, after approximately a 2 mile track Rutherford County Communications received another call with information that two subjects matching the description had doubled back.
McDowell County was contacted for the assistance of more K-9 units, NCSHP for helicopter assistance and RCSO Helicopter.
The perimeter was set up, and as McDowell County arrived with a K-9 unit, Rutherford County Communication received another call with information of the two subjects’ location. The McDowell County K-9 was deployed at the last confirmed sighting. Officers with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and two deputies began a track.
