Moore County Sheriff Neil Godfrey would like to recognize all Veterans and thank them and their families for their many sacrifices.

Memorial Day honors service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. Deceased veterans are also remembered on Veterans Day but the day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military - in war or peacetime.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day; Amended Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars; November 11th became known as “Veterans Day.”

President Woodrow Wilson spoke of the “solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service” and the “gratitude for victory.”

“When I reflect on Veterans Day, I am always humbled by the many sacrifices of past and present men and women who are willing to stand for our values as a country” said Sheriff Neil Godfrey. “This weekend the Moore County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the Southern Pines Veterans Parade out of respect and appreciation for the men and women of our Armed Services. I am honored to serve our Veterans and all the citizens of Moore County; on behalf of me, my family and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, thank you!”

Honor to the soldier and sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor, also, to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field and serves, as he best can, the same cause.
