Central Park Dog Park Advisory & Temporary Closure

The City of Fremont Animal Services Unit and Community Services Department were informed on Monday, November 6, 2017,  that a dog whom frequents the Central Park Dog Park, located at 1740 Stevenson Blvd., may have been diagnosed with Leptospirosis.    At this time, the City is not able to verify the information, nor can we determine, if true,  where the bacteria may have been contracted.  The Central Park Dog Park was scheduled for closure this week, prior to notification of a potential contamination, for normal routine cleaning and maintenance.  In response to this information, extra cleaning precautions and advisories are being taken as an added safeguard. The Central Park Dog Park will remain closed until this work is completed.

Leptospirosis is a bacteria commonly spread through the urine of infected animals, including wildlife.  The bacteria lives in water and soil and is often transmitted via contaminated stagnant water, such as marshes, muddy areas and puddles.  Dogs typically come into contact with the Leptospira bacteria while swimming, passing through, or drinking contaminated water.  They can also acquire it if they come into direct contact with urine from an infected animal.  The bacteria can be transmitted to humans.

Fremont Animal Services would like to advise concerned pet owners to contact their veterinarian to assure that their pets are currently vaccinated against Leptospirosis.

We know the health and safety of your animals is very important and we want you to stay informed.  Help us to minimize the risk by not allowing standing water at the dog park.  Please consider bringing your own water bowl and taking it home with you.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during the park closure.
