2nd Update is as follows:
____________________________________________________

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault with a firearm on deputies and the deputy involved shooting that ensued.

On Thursday, November 02, 2017 at 2:57 P.M., deputies were conducting a traffic stop at the intersection of Aranbe Avenue and Lucien Street, Willowbrook, when the suspect shot at them from his residence in the 2100 block of Lucien Street.

The deputies did not return fire but set up a containment of the area in an attempt at taking the suspect into custody.  Members of the Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded and assisted with searching for the suspect.  During the search the suspect was observed exiting the rear of his residence carrying an assault rifle.  The suspect hopped over the rear fence of his backyard and into his neighbor’s back yard in the 2100 block of Shauer Street.

Members of the Special Enforcement Bureau approached the home on Shauer Street utilizing an armored vehicle as cover.

The suspect had positioned himself on the east side of his neighbor’s home and placed the assault rifle against the east wall of the home.  As the deputies pulled up in front of the home the suspect walked back toward the rifle as if he was going to pick it up.  That’s when the deputy involved shooting occurred.

The suspect collapsed next to the assault rifle.  Not knowing if the suspect was incapacitated, the deputies utilized a flash bang diversion type device to determine if the suspect was actually hurt or just trying to ambush them.  Once the deputy’s felt it was safe, they approached the suspect and took him into custody.

The suspect, 20-year-old male Hispanic, was treated by paramedics and transported to a local hospital.  He remains hospitalized for gunshot wounds to his upper body and is listed in critical condition.

The suspect’s gun, an assault type rifle, was recovered at the scene.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

The investigation is on-going.
