Nature of Incident: DUI / Driver’s License Checkpoint Results Location: City of Thousand Oaks Date & Time: October 28, 2017 from 8:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Unit Responsible: Thousand oaks Police Department - Traffic Bureau (S)uspects, (V)ictims, (P)arty, (D)ecedent City of Residence Age (S) Orozco, Jorge (S) Iverson, Laura Simi Valley Simi Valley 31 41 Narrative: October DUI / Driver’s License Checkpoint On October 28, 2017, the Thousand Oaks Police Department-Traffic Bureau conducted a DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint at two locations in the City of Thousand Oaks. Vehicles were screened as they passed through the checkpoint locations. Arrests were made for DUI and citations were issued for unlicensed drivers. The first checkpoint location was northbound Erbes Road south of La Granada Drive from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 a.m. The second location was eastbound Olsen Road at the City of Thousand Oaks city limits from 11:45 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on October 29. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public. DUI / Driver’s License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and related injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive alcohol and/ or drug impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging alcohol or drugged impaired drivers to use sober designated drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while yielding considerable cost savings of $6.00 for every $1.00 spent. Ninety percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints. During the listed Checkpoint Operation the following occurred: • 1040 vehicles entered the Checkpoint • 662 vehicles were screened in the Checkpoint • Two DUI alcohol impaired arrests were made • No DUI drug impaired arrests were made • Six drivers were cited/arrested for operating a vehicle while unlicensed or for having a suspended/revoked driver’s license • A total of 14 citations were issued Law Enforcement emphasizes the preventable nature of DUI, reminding everyone that all it takes is a little preplanning. Designate a sober driver, call a friend or family member for a ride or call a cab. Whatever you do, don’t drink and drive or drive while drug impaired. The California Office of Traffic Safety DDVIP (Designated Driver VIP) mobile app is now available for free to download on iOS and Android devices. Launched last year, the new DDVIP app offers enhanced features, allowing users to “Map a Spot” with their current location to find DDVIP partnering establishments in their area or a “List of Spots” to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California. Users will be offered free incentives at each bar to celebrate their life saving role. They can stay up-to-date with the latest from DDVIP and see what other users are saying via its social tab. Also through the app, for those who want to imbibe but also make it a point to plan ahead, users can easily order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb-all from one screen. Driver’s caught driving under the influence can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. That does not include embarrassment when family and friends find out. The Thousand Oaks Police Department will be conducting another DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on December 9, 2017 (Saturday) in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and related injuries on our streets and highways.
