Advisory

FIREARMS SAFETY

Yesterday, it was reported that a 3rd grade student in San Ramon brought a pistol to school in his backpack. The incident was subsequently investigated and the child's father was arrested for criminal storage of a firearm, child endangerment and possession of stolen property. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the father is facing serious criminal charges.

This is an excellent opportunity to stress the importance of keeping firearms securely stored, away from children, and to talk with your children about firearms to overcome their natural curiosity. If firearms and firearms safety are simply ignored and not discussed, they may become mysterious to kids...and kids may seek to discover information about these forbidden topics in their own way, which may be dangerous.

Everyone has to make their own decisions about what to discuss with their kids. However, given that children are often unaware of the dangers around them, their curiosity about firearms could inadvertently place them in harms way.

Consider teaching kids these 4 rules to follow if they find a firearm:

1. STOP what you’re doing.
2. DON’T TOUCH IT.
3. LEAVE THE AREA.
4. TELL AN ADULT.

We as adults have responsibilities to keep firearms securely stored and to model safe behavior. It is a State Law that firearms must be safely stored so that a child cannot get to it and use it. Please ensure that your firearms are securely stored and that children are educated to know that guns are not toys and should not be handled without express permission from their parent or guardian.

The Moraga Police Department has free gun locks that are available at our front counter or from any officer. Additionally, if you have a firearm that is no longer wanted or working properly, the Moraga Police Department will dispose of it, free of charge.
