Here are some safety tips to insure you have a Boo-tastic Halloween!! (See what I did there?)

It’s October 31st, Halloween is upon us, and dentists and dental hygienists everywhere are just cringing.  As your miniature witches, goblins and ghouls get ready to go out and collect as many sweet treats as possible, there a few things to keep in mind for a safe venture:

  • Be visible! Design a costume using white or bright colored pieces, decorate with reflective tape, and carry a flashlight or glow sticks.
  • Take photos before leaving the house.  In the unfortunate circumstance that someone should get separated from everyone else – you’ll have a current photo for law enforcement.
  • Wear sturdy footwear and a properly-sized costume to prevent trips and falls.
  • Don’t go Trick-or-Treating alone! Bring a trusted adult and stay together.
  • Never go into the home of a stranger.
  • Dress warm! October in Alaska is CHILLY.
  • Use face paint and makeup instead of wearing a mask whenever possible. Masks can make it difficult to see and hear.
  • Stay out of the street, watch for cars, and cross at designated crosswalks.
  • Have a parent or trusted adult examine all of the candy BEFORE you eat it.
  • Make sure someone in your group has a cell phone and report any suspicious activity if seen.
In the days following Halloween, remember that carved pumpkins are a real treat for moose.  They will come up on your porch to dine so either remember to throw away your jack-o-lanterns when trick-or-treaters are gone or keep an eye out for our ½-ton fuzzy friends to show up for meal time.
