Upcoming Public Hearings Sherman Planning and Zoning

On November 2, 2017, Sherman’s Planning and Zoning Commission will hold two Public Hearings at Mallory Town Hall at 7:00 pm. One, an amendment to Section 352 Farming, and the second to consider whether to opt out of Connecticut Act 17-155.

The Commission has been working on an amendment to the Farm Regulation for the better part of a year. The goal is to expand our current regulation to allow for diversity of activities to allow for improved financial viability of our farms. A Public Workshop was held in July which was well attended by interested parties.  At that meeting public opinion was considered and modifications were made to the original document’s content. The Regulation that evolved will be presented in November and is available on the Sherman’s Nixle website. Copies are also available at the P&Z office.

The State of Connecticut enacted a Public Act Concerning Temporary Health Care Structures (17-155) which became Statute October 1, 2017. The purpose of this  Public Hearing is for Planning and Zoning to receive community input prior to making a recommendation-to opt out or not-to our Board of Selectmen who will then make the final decision.  The act establishes conditions under which property owners may place temporary health care structures on residential property to care for individuals with qualifying mental or physical impairments. It prohibits zoning regulations from barring such structures unless the municipality follows a specified process to opt out of the act’s requirements. The act establishes various requirements for the structures, including maximum size and maximum occupancy requirements and a permit approval process for the individuals seeking to install one.  It also authorizes municipalities to oversee and enforce the Act. A copy of the Act is available on Sherman’s Nixle website and the P&Z office.

These are both topics of community interest and we look forward to hearing and considering public input on both counts.
