South Brunswick Traffic Stop Leads to Gun Arrest / Upcoming Storm Alert

South Brunswick Traffic Stop Leads to Gun Arrest
A traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a Monmouth Junction man and the recovery of a loaded handgun.  South Brunswick Police Officer Ricardo Moreira was on patrol on Route 1, on Saturday October 21, 2017 at 11:19pm when he observed a red Nissan Altima turn onto Blackhorse lane, and fail to use a turn signal.  Officer Moreira conducted a motor vehicle stop on the Nissan Altima and it was then discovered that driver Jordan Smith, 23 years old from Monmouth Junction, had an active traffic warrant out for his arrest.  Mr. Smith was placed under the arrest for the warrant and was searched.  During the search Officer Moreira located a loaded Lorcin 25 caliber handgun hidden inside of Mr. Smith’s pants, near his calf.  Officers at the scene also searched Mr. Smith’s vehicle which resulted in locating prescription medication inside of a small zip lock bag which Mr. Smith did not have a prescription for.

Mr. Smith was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unauthorized possession of prescription medication.  Mr. Smith was lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center without bail pending his first court appearance.

Chief Raymond Hayducka expressed the dangers Officers can face when conducting motor vehicle stops. "Officer Moreira did an excellent job at getting a loaded gun off our streets. The seizure of the weapon just highlights the risks of everyday car stops."
Upcoming Storm Alert
WEATHER THREAT: Heavy Rain & Isolated Severe Weather

TIME PERIOD: Tuesday October 24, 2017 7AM – 7PM (Main Threat 8AM – 3PM)

A slow moving frontal boundary will approach late tonight and more / less stall in the area into Tuesday. This will result in an extended period for heavy downpours and a few storms.  Because of this and from fallen leaves, there is an enhanced poor drainage / roadway
flooding threat. Overall, through tomorrow 1.50 - 2.50" rainfall is expected. There is still uncertainty where the 2 - 3" amounts will fall, but in those locations flooding will be the worst and may also cause smaller streams / creeks to flood. Additionally, any storm may contain
strong winds and even a brief tornado.  Overall, this activity will be most widespread midmorning to early afternoon, with gradual improvement late (from W to E).
