DATE/TIME: Tuesday, October 17, 2017
INCIDENT: Search & Rescue of a Lost Hiker
LOCATION: 49 Palms Canyon, Twentynine Palms
VICTIM: Terrence Ohalloran (Age 57) out of New York
SUMMARY: At approximately 1640 hours, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a call from a lost hiker, Terrence Ohalloran. He indicated he had a bottle of water and was not injured.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department patrol helicopter 40King8 flew to the coordinates given by Ohalloran’s cell phone and located him down in a canyon, approximately 1.5 miles south of the nearest accessible road which was surrounded by large boulders and shrubbery. Ohalloran appeared to be tired and it was unknown whether he had any water left at that time.
40King8 crew conducted an offsite landing and Deputy Heard hiked toward Ohalloran to guide him out of the area, but he said he was unable to walk down the canyon. 40King8 flew over Ohalloran’s position to conduct a hover-step maneuver. The crew guided Ohalloran to a large boulder that he stepped onto while Deputy Brimmer lowered the helicopter. From there, Deputy Heard was able to assist him into the helicopter. Ohalloran was flown to a nearby landing zone and turned over to Morongo Patrol Deputy Wayne Greer.
