BE PREPARED – Public Service Announcement

How would you know if there were fires approaching or evacuation orders? In Calaveras County, we are no strangers to devastation and how fast moving fires can affect communities. Deputies start responding upon initial reports of wildland fires to coordinate with incident command and conduct evacuations and notifications when necessary. We live in a widespread rural community, even under emergency response sometimes it takes us time to get there. Don’t wait to act. If you are in an area being affected by a fire or other disaster and you feel the need to evacuate; then safely do so. Visit https://www.ready.gov/ on-line to learn more information about being prepared for disasters.

The Sheriff’s Office and Office of Emergency Services in Calaveras County have multiple communication plans in place that will be outlined below, but we still need your help to be and remain prepared. As seen in recent fires in Northern California, sometimes cell phone towers and other infrastructure can be damaged which might delay official notifications.

Listed below are just some small, yet important, steps that you can take to be prepared in case of an emergency in Calaveras County. Not one avenue is a perfect fail safe solution, but staying informed, aware and prepared is best practice.

CodeRED is the primary alert notification system utilized by Calaveras County. Although the system does receive landline information and numbers from public databases, don’t assume that your landline number is automatically in the system. Also, VOIP phone numbers are not automatically added to the system. The Calaveras County website has a link to sign up for CodeRED alerts http://co.calaveras.ca.us/Quick-Links/Code-Red . By signing up you can confirm that your landline is registered, confirm your property address, register your cell phone to receive calls or text messages, and register an email address to receive alerts. CodeRED is utilized for threats to health or safety of residents.

Nixle is an on-line mass notification system also utilized by the Sheriff’s Office. On the Internet you can go to https://local.nixle.com/register/ and register your e-mail address, home phone, and cell phone number. From your cell phone you can also TEXT YOUR ZIP CODE to 888777. You will receive a text message back confirming your enrollment.
