Planned Military Fly Over No Cause for Alarm

This afternoon between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm, several military jets will conduct low altitude fly over’s in the South Bay, Harbor, and Palos Verdes Peninsula Areas.  The flights commemorate the 70th anniversary of Capt. Charles “Chuck” Yeager’s legendary first supersonic flight on Oct. 14, 1947. 

Edwards Air Force Base is launching two formation flights which are scheduled to pass over Southern California schools, which include several in Lomita Sheriff’s Station jurisdiction, as well as surrounding cities.

The formation, containing an F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-15 Eagle, F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, is scheduled to fly a flight path over several local schools:

Wilmington Park Elementary School, Wilmington
Wilmington Park Early Education Center, Wilmington
Fries Avenue Elementary School, Wilmington
Normont Elementary School, Harbor City
Harbor City Elementary School, Harbor City
Fleming Middle School, Lomita
Dapplegray Elementary School, Rolling Hills Estates
Soleado Elementary Schoolr, Rancho Palos Verdes
Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, Rolling Hills Estates
Vista Grande Elementary School, Rancho Palos Verdes
Lunada Bay Elementary School, Palos Verdes Estates

The flights are part of a two-day event at Edwards AFB, Family Day October 13th  and the Run with History event October 14th, that mark both the 70th anniversary of supersonic flight and the U.S. Air Force’s 70th Birthday.

The flights may catch some residents off guard, but there is no need for concern.

Lomita Sheriff’s Station provides law enforcement services to the cities of Lomita, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, and unincorporated communities in San Pedro and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
